ANTIQUE SCRIMSHAW SHAVING BOX "ZMC"
A
rare and choice Captain's shaving box with mirror. Constructed of exotic tropical woods
and inlaid with whale ivory. This extraordinary box was the property of a well-known
Nantucket whaling captain, Zenas Morslander Coleman (Born 1816). See Starbuck's history
for list of his voyages. Note the silhouette inlays of his speaking trumpet, quadrant, and
telescope.
Great
condition with a beautiful untouched patina. The original mirror has faded over the 150
years - the hinges are hand-made of copper.
American
origin - Circa 1850 - 1860. (Found in an Old North Wharf, Nantucket cottage).
